This course is designed for those who wish to pursue a career in the performing and session sector of the contemporary music industry. Emphasis is on instrumental tuition, both solo and working within groups, composition and recording techniques. Expert tuition is available for drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and vocals.

Assessment
Assessment is on a continuous basis where each module is broken down into separate performance criteria. The main emphasis of the course is on practical assessment however certain modules are in the form of project/research and are assessed through submitted written work. Assessment will include mandatory Group Award Graded Units. Group Award Graded Units are a means of ensuring that candidates have achieved the principal aims of an HNC or HND by assessing the integration of knowledge and/or skills developed in the individual Units which make up the Group Award.

Entry Requirements
NC Music or equivalent, or Two Higher Grade passes, one of which should preferably be Music. An audition and interview will form an important part of the selection procedure.

Progression Routes
Successful completion of the HND allows progression to degree courses in Music throughout Britain. The entry points will depend of particular courses and subject to auditions.

Careers
Students completing the HND have the relevant key skills to enter the music and related industries. Crucial to students’ success will be their passion and determination to succeed and ability to operate successfully within a client focused industry. Former students are finding careers as session musicians, recording artists, instrumental instructors, songwriters, performers, promoters and lecturers.

BA (HONS) POPULAR MUSIC F/T

COURSE DESCRIPTION


This course is designed not only for those who want to be performers in music, but also for others who want to work in the industry as composers or producers, or in the wider musical community. Students will achieve a high degree of competence on their chosen instrument or as a composer, develop versatility in the use of music technology, and extend their cultural, critical and creative abilities through a wide-ranging programme of study and practice. Suitable instruments for ‘principal study’ on this course are vocals, guitar, bass guitar, drums and composition.

Students will be based in the Ian Tomlin School of Music, situated in the Queen’s Craig building of our Craighouse Campus. Two miles from Edinburgh city centre, the campus is an appropriate and inspiring location for creative arts education, with panoramic views of the whole city and beautiful wooded parklands. Students will have access to state-of-the-art facilities including three recording studios and fully networked MIDI suites. The School also has well-equipped teaching and rehearsal rooms as well as a recital area which plays host to a lively programme of performances involving both students and visiting artists.

Stage 1
Principal Study I, General Music Skills, MIDI Sequencing I, Music Technology Applications, Principal Study II, Recording Technology I, Music in the Community I, Case Studies in Cultural Studies.

Stage 2
Principal Study III, Recording Technology II, The Business of Music, Principal Study IV, MIDI Sequencing II; 2 options from Jazz Improvisation I, Elementary Acoustics for Musicians, Music Scoring Software II, Music in the Community II, Studio Techniques, Popular Music and Ensemble Performance I, plus an elective from the University catalogue.

Stage 3
Music, Creativity and Communication I, MIDI Sequencing III, Production and Mixing Techniques, Music, Creativity and Communication II, World Music; 2 options from Music Scoring Software II, Principal Study V, Popular Culture, Art of Teaching, Jazz Improvisation II, Music for the Screen, Introduction to Music Therapy and Ensemble Performance II, plus an elective from the University catalogue.

Stage 4
Research Presentation or Advanced Instrumental Performance, Major Music Production, Fast Track Entrepreneurship and 2 options from Sound Design, Jazz Improvisation III, Sound Synthesis and Principal Study Teaching.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS


Entry 200 UCAS points, of which a minimum 180 are Higher/A Level to include Music 72 points and English 60 points. Audition and interview required.

Principal Instrument Performance (Voice, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Composition) should be at AB / Rock School Grade VII standard or equivalent.

Holders of a Higher National Certificate will be considered for direct entry to year 2. Holders of a Higher National Diploma will be considered for direct entry to year 3

SPECIAL FACILITIES


The School is well equipped with musical instruments and IT resources as well as performance and practice spaces. Some of the facilities available are listed below:
MIDI suite with 16 iMacs running Cubase, ProTools and Reason software. Each workstation has its own synthesiser and 8 channel mixer attached; 3 Recording Studios; 1 with a 96-channel control surface and surround sound capabilities, 2 with 48-channel mixing desks, both running ProTools software; 4 Rehearsal Rooms, each with its own PA system, drum kit and amplifiers; 1 ‘portable’ studio; 60-seat recital room; Student Common Room with 3 PCs, one loaded with score writing software; Music library; 15 Practice Rooms, each with an upright piano; 1 percussion room with a variety of percussion instruments including a unique set of traditional African drums; Several Grand Pianos, 2 Organs and a Harpsichord

*Students are expected to provide their own ‘principal study’ instrument, however secondary instruments can be loaned from our extensive storeroom
